There are certain moral mazes to be negotiated when photographing private people in public spaces. I like to try and be respectful but remain discreet so that the subject’s behaviour is in no way influenced by the intrusion of my camera.

I always also try and think about why I like the shot, and generally it is either because there is a positive uniqueness about the subject, or there is something unusual or quirky about the scene.

That said, my nerve does still tend to fail me and I miss more shots than I take.
